PEC to Lead Planning and Delivery of Water Supply Optimization in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement

Driving Sustainable Water Supply Solutions in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement

Building on its proven track record of delivering similar assignments in the same region, Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) is honored to serve as Project Manager for the planning and execution of strategic optimization interventions for multiple discrete, predominantly solar-powered water supply systems in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement, spanning the districts of Madi-Okollo and Terego.

This initiative forms part of the Water Supply and Sanitation for Refugee Settlements and Host Communities in Northern Uganda (WatSSUP) programme, implemented by the German Government through GIZ, in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment. It represents a key contribution to Germany’s support for Uganda’s implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR), particularly in integrating water supply service delivery for refugees into national systems to ensure long-term, sustainable management. This aligns with the Comprehensive National Development Planning Framework (CNDPF).

Boosting Capacity and Efficiency

The optimization intervention aims to increase the abstraction and transmission capacity of two strategic production wells, ensuring a consistent and expanded water supply to the designated service areas. This is a crucial step towards the phased decommissioning of aging, inefficient, and low-yielding pump stations.

By enhancing infrastructure performance, the intervention also creates opportunities for extending the network to currently underserved settlement units and neighboring host communities. The overarching goal is to achieve operational efficiency, commercial viability, and financial sustainability—while advancing public service objectives for water supply systems initially developed under emergency humanitarian response.

The key activities include; upgrading production wells and pumping capacity, enhancing solar power systems, improving transmission lines, and expanding and rehabilitating storage reservoirs.

Sustainability and Long-term Benefits

These optimization measures are designed to contribute to the long-term sustainable operation and maintenance of water supply infrastructure, serving both refugees and surrounding host communities, in line with Uganda’s Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF).

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project delivers far-reaching benefits, such as strengthening public health, supporting livelihoods, and fostering social cohesion in the region.

PEC remains committed to delivering innovative, robust, and standards-compliant engineering solutions that not only advance the global water sector but also uphold the dignity and well-being of the communities we serve.
