The project involved the development of different options for the dual design (including options for accessing the frontage businesses, pedestrian facilities, drainage, traffic flow from the various access roads) and preparation of the options report as well as detailed designs, preparation of cost estimates and the relevant specifications
Challenge
The first 1.3 km of Gayaza Road handles intense city traffic but is only a single two-lane strip lined with shops and side streets. Cars, trucks, bodas and pedestrians all crowd the same space, causing daily jams, unsafe crossings and frequent puddles because runoff has nowhere to go. Any upgrade must double the road’s capacity, keep storefront driveways and feeder-road traffic working smoothly, add safe walkways, and install proper drainage—yet it all has to fit inside a tight urban corridor
Solution
The design team drew up several dual-carriageway layouts and tested each one for traffic flow, business access, pedestrian safety, drainage and cost. After review with the road authority and local traders, the preferred option emerged: two separated lanes in each direction, short service bays for loading, raised footpaths with refuge islands, and a closed-pipe drainage system tied into the city network. The consultancy then produced a full options report, detailed drawings, bills of quantities, cost estimates and technical specifications, giving the client a ready-to-build package that eases congestion, protects pedestrians and keeps businesses connected.
